How long will it take before I get the results I want? This depends on the nature of the issues you want to address. Quitting smoking can be accomplished in one session, provided you have made a firm decision for your own reasons that you choose to be a nonsmoker for the rest of your life. You can choose to extend the process by up to 4 weekly sessions, cutting down gradually, until after the last one, you are smoke free, or you may want to continue for some additional support or to address other, potentially related issues. It is always up to you. Losing weight is always a minimum of 4 sessions (one per week), so that we can be sure to address all the major stumbling blocks affecting it. Depending on how much weight you need to lose, and how much ongoing support you are likely to need, or want, you may choose to continue on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis to make sure you stay on track, and to deal with any new obstacles you may encounter. Some phobias, and some kinds of anxieties can usually be dealt with in one session. Sometimes underlying issues can be complex and you will not get full relief until they are all resolved. In this case you will need to persevere, and do homework in between sessions that will speed your progress along. We cannot know how long this will take until you have gotten the relief you want, but it will certainly be less than simply talk therapy, which would likely not be under a year of weekly sessions. For the improvement of sports performance, or other skills performance, as well as other types of life or career coaching, we will take time during the initial session to determine your goals and outcomes, and develop a plan to help you reach them. Generalized anxieties, depression, self esteem issues, the aftermath of abuse, anorexia, bulimia, and other serious disordered eating, as well as any other long term or deeply rooted emotional and psychological issues usually have many different aspects that may need addressing before you get full relief. It varies widely from one person to another, and is difficult to predict exactly how long it is likely to take. In more ‘traditional’ types of psychotherapy these kinds of issues usually take years before you get any noticeable results. With the techniques that Nancy uses and her expertise in using them, the length of the entire process will be dramatically reduced. You will begin to notice some kind of positive difference after the first session, and it is best to play it by ear, or let it unfold as we go along, after that.
